ABOUT THIS EPISODE

In this episode of Chorley FC Stories, Ian and Alison Hargreaves reflect on how they first discovered Chorley FC and the role it has come to play in their lives. Originally following football at a higher level, rising costs led them to look for a more local and accessible club where they could continue enjoying the game. What they found at Victory Park was something far more meaningful: a welcoming football community where supporters, players and volunteers all feel connected.

Ian and Alison share memories of their first visits to the ground and how quickly they felt at home among the supporters. They recall the characters who made matchdays special, the friendships formed on the terraces, and the unique atmosphere that comes from watching football at a club where everyone knows each other. For them, Chorley FC is not just about the result on the pitch but about the people who gather week after week to support the Magpies and enjoy the experience together.

Over time their connection with the club grew beyond simply attending matches. The couple became regular volunteers, helping with matchday activities such as selling Golden Goal and 50/50 tickets and travelling to away games whenever possible. Through this involvement they have developed strong relationships with fellow supporters, players and staff, reinforcing the sense that Chorley FC is truly a family club built on shared passion and community spirit.

Ian and Alison’s story highlights the importance of non-league football in bringing people together and creating lasting memories. Their reflections capture the humour, warmth and loyalty that define the culture around Victory Park, where generations of supporters continue to pass their love of the club on to others.

This episode is part of the Chorley FC Stories heritage project led by Chorley FC Community Foundation, which aims to capture and preserve the voices and memories of people connected to the club so that the history and community spirit surrounding Chorley FC can continue to be shared with future generations.

WHY IT MATTERS

These Stories Deserve To Be Heard

Football clubs don't just exist on a pitch. They live in the memories of the people around them, the families who have followed the same club for generations, the volunteers who give their Saturdays without a second thought, the players who came through the ranks and never forgot where they started.

Victory Park is more than a ground. It's where people belong. Chorley Stories exists to preserve that, to make sure the voices of our community are recorded, respected, and shared for years to come.

“I still get a buzz when I walk onto Victory Park… after all these years.”

— Bernard Wilson, Chorley fan, 60 years
